How Alveley Mining Heritage Group Came About

In 2015/16 some members of Alveley Historical Society had proposed a project focussing on the heritage of the coal mining industry in Alveley. A successful grant application for a "Coal Mining Heritage Weekend" was granted by Alveley and Romsley Parish Council in July 2016 with the intention of working towards the commemoration of the 50th anniversary in 2019 of the closure of Alveley Colliery and the end of coal mining in the area. 

Due to the heavy work load, extensive time consuming nature and urgency of this project Alveley Historical Society decided it wasn't a direction that they wished to pursue and  so a separate group was subsequently set up.

Thus Alveley Mining Heritage group was formed, part funded from the project grant from Alveley & Romsley Parish Council, part from events revenues, donations and book sales.

So, Alveley Mining Heritage Group is undertaking the Alveley Weighbridge and Coal Mining Heritage Project 2016-19

The project aims to commemorate the 50th Anniversary in 2019 of the closure of Alveley Pit and Highley Colliery, and the end of coal mining in this part of Shropshire.
