Coal Mining Heritage Project 2016-2019 

The Coal Mining Heritage Project began in 2016 to raise awareness of the 50th commemoration in 2019 of the closure of the colliery and the end of coal mining in the area.

There will be 2 events to commemorate the colliery closure, both occuring in Highley.

2. Coal Mining History Day – GET INVOLVED!

A family friendly and social occasion

Help is wanted to recruit members to Alveley Mining Heritage Group in this exciting 50th Anniversary year since the closure of Alveley Colliery.

This is a voluntary role which could be shared and may suit either someone retired or seeking experience for their CV. The role entails maintaining a membership list according to GDPR regs, approaching people in a friendly and polite manner and explaining and encouraging people to support the work and aims of the group by becoming members.

You will be required to attend occasional events and meetings, handle money, administer simple paperwork, have good literacy and telephone manner and basic IT skills.

Alveley Mining Heritage Group would like to thank everyone who has contributed in any way to the Coal Mining Heritage project set up to commemorate the closure of NCB Alveley Colliery (formerly Highley Mining Company Ltd.) 50 years ago. The group has provided an open platform for displays of local mining artefacts. Items for publication and support are welcome for the following programme of local coal mining heritage events in the area.

Mining Display at Severn Centre Highley:

May to August during normal public opening times. Current displays include items from Highley, Alveley. Kinlet and Billingsley Collieries.

Drop in Session:

Wednesday 5th June, 6:00 – 7:00 pm, Severn Centre, Highley. Invitation to bring along local Mining artefacts to rotate loan displays or items for inclusion in AMH publication.

AMH Open Meeting:

20th May at 3:30 at Severn Valley Country Park Visitor Centre. Come and find out about events during the rest of this anniversary year and contributions received for displays and publication. All Welcome.

Collections Care:

Friday14th June at 2:30 – 4:30 pm, Severn Centre, Bridgnorth Road , Highley, WV16 5JG. Opportunity to find out how to catalogue and care for heritage possessions. Free Event. All welcome.

AMH display at Bridgnorth History Day:

Saturday 14th September, 10:00 – 14:00, Hosted by Bridgnorth Library. Free Event. Contribution loans welcome and invitation to all to come along and talk to visitors, former workers and families.

50th Anniversary Commemorative Event:

Hosted by Severn Valley Country Park, Sunday 6th October (provisional date).
