The mine car, situated at SVCP, is actually the property of the Shropshire Mines Trust and it is of a type used at Alveley Colliery. We understand that it was positioned on site when the slag heap was first transformed into the lovely Country Park we are all able to enjoy today. At this point it was painted black, although it was originally white to be visible underground.
Unfortunately over the years it started to look in a sorry state, heavily encrusted in rust, it had sunk into the bare earth and scrub had grown all around it so when this site had been identified for our noticeboard we felt it only right to transform the Mine car display for the public to enjoy. Alveley Mining Heritage set about gaining help in the tasks and sponsorship in kind to clear and level the site, enhance the appearance of mine car display, help preserve it and mount it on authentic Alveley rails and top it with coal.
The staff and volunteer team too at Severn Valley Country Park have been most supportive of our ideas and have helped to make them a reality every step of the way. The Mine Car is now beautifully displayed. We have, after consultation with staff and visitors to the park retained the black as it is positioned in such a sensitive area high on the ridge. It now makes a superb historic feature and enhances the new picnic area and gives visitors another insight into the mining heritage of the area. The idea for this project was first mooted in August 2016 and the project was completed in July 2017. Thanks to everyone concerned. Please see our list of sponsors to whom we are most grateful for their support.
Phase 1: Moving the mine car and laying bed and track
Phase 2: Bryan Cox undertakes Sand Blasting and re-painting the mine car
Finished!
The Mine Car in situ now looks splendid after a great deal of preparation and coats of paint. We have received tremendous support in kind for this project and, with the revamped area too, it makes a splendid historical feature.
Rails encrusted in concrete preserve a time now gone. J T Castings kindly donated a length of rail from an area where they are expanding office space. We have used them for our Mine Car display enhancement project.
